Girls Basketball
Spring Valley went on a dream run over the break, finishing 3-0 with wins over Clayton 44-42 Dec. 27, over Prairie Farm 48-31 Dec. 28 and 57-25 over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser on Friday. The wins were big after four straight losses and the Cardinals are now 5-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference.
After opening the year on a tough 0-6 stretch, River Falls has found its groove in a way, going 2-2 over the last four and going 2-1 in conference over that stretch to sit at 2-2 in conference on the year. The Wildcats did take a lengthy break from Dec. 20 to Jan. 3 from games, and they won their lone game of the new year 75-50 over New Richmond.
Ellsworth took a hiatus from Dec. 20 to Jan. 2 where the team would resume with a 42-31 win at Turtle Lake. The Panthers won the first half 33-11 and coasted from there to move to 4-5 overall and still sit at 0-4 in Middle Border play.
Elmwood/Plum City fell to 0-9 on the year after a 64-42 loss at Blair-Taylor on Saturday. The season has not gone the way EPC had hoped, but the Wolves have made major improvements in terms of the final scores from a year ago.
Prescott fell to 3-6 after a tough holiday tournament but remain 2-2 in Middle Border games. The Cardinals dropped a game to Regis 66-40 Dec. 27 and 79-21 to Eau Claire Memorial on Dec. 28.
Boys Basketball
Spring Valley got back into action Friday night and took care of business 58-48 at Unity. The win was a fifth straight for the Cardinals who now stand at 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Dunn-St. Croix games.
EPC split games at its hosted EPC City Classic, beating Cadott 88-83 and losing to Alma/Pepin 67-64. The two games gave the Wolves a lot of late game experience as they came away with the split. Lucas Glaus put on a scoring clinic against Cadott, scoring 44 points on 12-20 shooting. EPC lost at Blair-Taylor on Saturday 74-52.
River Falls is on a solid run over the break, beating D.C. Everest 47-40 Dec. 30, Medford 63-46 Dec. 31 and New Richmond 71-52 Friday. The wins moved the Wildcats to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference.
Ellsworth did not let River Falls have all the fun, going on a 3-0 run of its own. The Panthers competed in Elmwood, beating Cadott 74-60 Dec. 27 and Alma/Pepin 84-47 Dec. 28 before tackling Webster 72-52 Friday. That stretch bolstered the Panthers to 6-2 with a 2-1 Middle Border record.
Prescott’s seven-game winning streak came to an end Friday after falling 60-47 against Durand-Arkansaw. The Cardinals brought a seven-point lead into the half, but the tides changed in the second. Prescott still stands at 7-2 with a perfect 3-0 conference record.
Wrestling
The River Falls girls won the New Richmond Invite, marking the first title in the team’s short history. The boys were at the event as well, and saw a trio of wrestlers taking home individual titles. For the girls it was Izzy Davenport at 107 pounds and Providence Kretzmann at 152 pounds picking up wins and the boys saw Jonas Longsdorf at 138, Vinny Costabilo at 144 and Jacob Hutchins at 190 with wins.
Prescott and Spring Valley/Elmwood also competed at the New Richmond event, with SVE taking fourth of 11 teams and Prescott falling to 11th.
Ellsworth took third at the Cannon Falls Invite with wins from Jace Anderson at 121 pounds and Henry Penn at 139 pounds.
Hockey
The River Falls boys did not play over the winter break, but the St. Croix Valley Fusion have gone 3-2 since Christmas with wins over Cap City, Central Wisconsin and Hayward Co-Op with two losses to a tough Superior team.
Swimming and Diving
The Wildcat boys are in the middle of a busy stretch with four competitions over the span of about a week and a half. Coming up is a conference matchup hosting Chippewa Falls on Thursday.
Gymnastics
The team took a nearly month long break from action and returns Saturday with a home invitational.
