Track & Field heating up with the weather

The Ellsworth, Prescott, and River Falls high school track teams competed in the 58th Stan Barr Relays in New Richmond on Friday. With conference meets a week away, the Stan Barr Relays are a time when coaches mix and match events to give their “horses” a chance to stretch their limits.

"The Stan Barr is a good steppingstone for conference," said Head River Falls Track Coach Kady Bauschelt. "We put kids in events as a workout to prepare for conference. Rarely do you have a kid run a mile and then run two 800's (meters). That's incredible what Quin did."

River Falls' Quin Andrews did just that. The senior's mile time (4:24.89) was second best overall in the 1600-meter relay. River Falls' Jonah Majerus (4:30.14) and Owen Koepke (4:30.78) finished fourth and sixth, respectively.

Fifteen minutes later, Andrews ran an 800-meter leg in the sprint medley relay helping his Wildcats to a third-place finish in the 16-team meet. Not long after that, Andrews helped his 4x800-meter relay team finish with a season best time of 8:29.29.

River Falls' Ty Bauschelt recently obliterated the school record high jump mark by three inches jumping 6'9" last Tuesday in Menomonie. The senior is headed to UW-Milwaukee next season to run track and his high jump of 6'8" took home first place honors at the Stan Barr.

The Wildcats' Abigail Treichel tied for first in the high jump on the girls' side. Treichel jumped 5'2" and was also busy in the 4x200-meter relay helping her Wildcats to a fourth-place finish and season best time (1:48.79) with Tirfe L'Allier, Abby Gilbertson, and Isabelle Russel.

L'Allier, Russell, Jayla Johnson, and Olivia Halvorson placed second in the girls 1600-meter relay. Their time of 4:18.18 was just 2/10ths of a second off the Wildcat school record.

"We knew they'd be good (the 1600-meter girls relay team)," said Coach Bauschelt. "But we didn't expect that time from them. They're all going to be back next year and that is very exciting."

The Wildcat boys' 4x400 team was mixing and matching last Friday. With two starters running other events, the Wildcats still finished fourth (3:29.16). River Falls' 4x400-meter boys' relay team has the second best time in the state to date. They are such a strong relay team, other coaches in the area have taken notice.

"They are phenomenal," said Prescott Co-Head Track Coach Emily Calabrese. "I know they didn't run their top team at Stan Barr, but it will be so fun to watch them compete at state. I'm so excited for that."

Emily Calabrese and her Prescott Cardinal sprinters are no joke either. The Cardinal 4x100-meter boys’ relay team of Andrew Lesso, Andrew Russell, Reese Stanton, and Ethan West ran a season best 42.83 on Friday for second place. It was the third fastest 4x100-meter time in Division 2 in the state this year.

"Their hand-offs were far from desirable," said Coach Emily Calabrese. “But even when we're not full strength, we're still setting records and that’s fun to see."

Prescott's 4x200-meter boys' relay team has the fourth best time in the state (Division 2) this season, just 4/10ths of a second away from top dog Osceola. The Cardinal 4x400-meter boys' relay has the second fastest time in the state, again just a second behind Osceola.

"Osceola’s track team has been the creme of the crop in the Middle Border Conference for a long time," said Ellsworth Throwing Coach Luke Blodgett. "But I think Prescott is going to give them all they can handle this year. Prescott is stacked. I just asked somebody yesterday what they are doing over there. Those guys are fast."

The Cardinals' junior Makaria Haas broke her own school record in the discus this past Tuesday. She placed fifth on Friday at the Stan Barr with a throw of 119' 9".

"Makaria trusts the plan," said Prescott Co-Head Coach Carl Calabrese. "She's patient and she's giving herself time to progress. When you work on one thing, it'll mess up another thing with timing. All the things are coming together and she's starting to get big throws."

Haas' discus throw has improved over 20 feet since the same time a year ago, according to Coach Carl Calabrese.

Staying on the girls' discus scene, Ellsworth's Maleah Petersen finish fifth in the shot put (35'10") and sixth in the discus (118'07"), though her personal record is north of 128'.

"Maleah is right on the verge of breaking the school record," said Blodgett. "Now that the weather is warming up, we just have to connect the dots on the technique. She's going to launch one and I think she has a good shot at breaking the shot record, too."

Ellsworth junior Carter Bjork finished 19th in the shot put on Friday but threw a personal record of 42'.

"Carter has balance and he's smooth," said Blodgett. "He wanted to go to the spin and get that rotational movement. His hard work is starting to pay off. He's so coachable and he's throwing five feet further than last year already."

The Panther's top thrower, Chace Kressin, is out with a shoulder injury but is hopefully expected back soon, according to Blodgett.

The Middle Border Conference track and field meet will be held at St. Croix Central High School on Tuesday, May 20. The Big Rivers Conference meet will be held at Chippewa Falls High School on Monday, May 19.
