To the editor,
Last night a man convicted of murder was put to death by nitrogen gas in Alabama. This morning observers of the execution described the throes of death as his body heaved and struggled for oxygen that wasn’t there. It took a number of minutes for him to die.
I think that all executions should be public. People need to watch and see how barbaric this mode of punishment is. It is not so much that the convicted person doesn’t deserve to die, although sometimes he/she does not. It is the psyche of our society that is damaged when its official function is to kill someone. It makes us less civilized and more inured to violent suffering and death. We get more than enough of that from reports of war.
