The floods of Prescott and our surrounding area

The Prescott Area Historical Society and the Pierce County Historical Association are presenting a display featuring the floods of our area. These natural events are a large part of our history and tell the stories of how our communities developed and why. Historical documents talk about the floods of the past from the pre-steamboat era to today. Floods are also events that unite communities, when good people help whoever is in need, as it should be.

We have been collecting flood photos from various sources, with over 250 on hand, and are still looking for more hidden treasures of our past. Your families are our local history and you may have items that help us preserve our history in your possession. Any flood pictures are important, as each one may fill in a blank in our story. We have one flood film from 1965 at present and are looking for more. We will be showing the 1965 film and a film on the floods of Spring Valley, where in 1934, they had 5 to 7 feet of water on Main Street and residential areas.

The personal stories of the floods bring the photos to life and we are collecting those also. If you have any, please contact us. Some are things we would never think of, such as sandbagging the locks and dams.

Our two history groups have been in existence for 75 years, with other local chapters joining us later. We have extensive collections of artifacts, books, plat maps, and thousands of photos of our area. We are always looking to find, preserve, and present our local history, while recruiting new members who can help in any capacity.

The formal dates for the flood displays will be May 13-21. Weekend hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; weekday times will be 4:30-8 p.m. Special showings can be arranged for other groups who are interested. Displays will stay up for most of the summer, along with our other features. Our building is next to the Clock Tower in downtown Prescott.

If you have any questions, send an email to prescottahs@gmail.com or call 715-531-8973. These contacts can be used to arrange a showing or to ask about joining us in our efforts. Hope to see you at the show.
